all the weather of the human heart – euan alexander millar-mcmeeken (review)

My introduction to Euan’s music came through his Glacis moniker. Instantly, I found myself captivated by his deeply emotive piano motifs and rich textures. It was evident that Euan had something significant to express with his music — something vast yet profoundly personal.

Since 2011, Euan has maintained a steady stream of releases that have pushed the boundaries of ambient and electronic music. With his works featured on labels such as Whitelabrecs, Oscarson, Fluid Audio, and Soft Corridor Records, he has built an impressive portfolio, collaborating with notable artists such as The Humble Bee, The Green Kingdom, Gavin Millar, and Adrian Lane.

His latest album, “All The Weather Of The Human Heart,” marks the inaugural full-length release on his newly established label, Sleep In The Fire Records. The label’s mission is to explore music with a Lo-Fi and broken sound, uncovering deeply unique compositions rooted in a DIY ethic.

“All The Weather Of The Human Heart” stands as a profoundly personal endeavor, brimming with sonic oddities, haunting vocals, and exquisitely crafted piano melodies. The album beckons the listener into a world of intricate microsounds, where soft textures intertwine with balanced instrumentation, gently pulsating in and out of the stereo field, guided by the dynamic flow of Euan’s voice. Static, hiss, and subtle tape warbles further enhance the album’s emotive nature, immersing the listener in a unique sonic palette.

Drawing inspiration from classic vintage recording techniques, the album exudes a ghostly nostalgia. Themes of melancholia, sadness, and despair are delicately explored, yet somehow, each track leaves the listener with a sense of beauty and hope. One of the album’s most striking features is Euan’s ability to place the vocals prominently in each piece, presenting himself and his voice in a vulnerable yet compelling manner that resonates deeply with listeners.

Featuring additional instrumentation from a diverse array of artists including Adrian Lane, Claire Deak, Peter Hollo, and Tony Dupe, the album feels more akin to a collaborative effort than a solo project. Each artist complements Euan’s minimal piano melodies, subtly guiding the album’s dynamics through its peaks and troughs. With meticulous attention to detail, every melody is carefully positioned, allowing moments of silence to penetrate and resonate. It’s a captivating exploration of minimalist musicianship.
